World Suicide Prevention Day... September 10, 2008

Natalie Staats Reiss, Ph.D. Updated: Sep 10th 2008

World suicide prevention day bannerToday is World Suicide Prevention Day.

The World Health Organization estimates that one million people each year die by suicide. Every minute there are two more deaths by suicide across the globe.

In developed countries, suicide is the 2nd or 3rd leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults and the 13th leading cause of death worldwide for people of all ages. In addition to those who die by suicide, many millions make non-fatal suicide attempts each year.

If you are experiencing suicidal feelings, you are NOT ALONE or lost.  These feelings and thoughts will pass if you reach out to others and get help. We have an array of resources available on our website regarding suicide.

If you are interesting in facts and figures and the nature of suicide, check out this article. If you are actively dealing with your own suicidal thoughts and feelings, click here to access our article Coping with Suicidality.  If you are trying to help a friend or family member who is feeling suicidal, please click here.
